Navigating Montpelier During Construction

State & Main Street Reconstruction – What Visitors Need to Know

Montpelier is getting some much-needed upgrades! As we continue into August 2025, construction on State and Main Streets moves into the final stages of updating underground infrastructure. While this work is essential, we know it can make getting around a little tricky.

We appreciate your patience and support for our local businesses during this time. Thank you for visiting Montpelier!

Getting Here & Parking

Downtown is Open! Shops, restaurants, and attractions are ready to welcome you.
Parking Updates: Some parking may be affected, but alternatives are being explored. Check out the parking map for more info on open lots.

Construction Update: Mid August
The State & Main Street Reconstruction Project is entering its final phase. Over the next few weeks, crews will complete sidewalk pours, curbing, light pole installation, and paving. Expect temporary parking restrictions, lane shifts, and Hubbard Street between E. State St and Liberty St is closed to through traffic on August 13 and 14.

Business access will be maintained with ramps and signage. Thank you for your continued support and patience as we wrap up this major downtown improvement project.

Walking & Exploring Downtown

Sidewalks Remain Open: Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
Wayfinding Signs: Look for signs guiding you to your favorite downtown spots, parking lots, and detours.
Events & Attractions: Construction won’t stop the fun! Check out our calendar for things to do.

More Details About the Project:

The current construction on State Street near the Rialto Bridge is the first of a two-part project to upgrade stormwater infrastructure throughout the heart of Montpelier’s Downtown. This project will remove stormwater pipes that are currently tied into the wastewater system, preventing sewage from overflowing into the Winooski River. The finished infrastructure will also treat stormwater runoff before entering the river reducing the pollutants in our local waterways.

Most of the work on State Street in the first phase will be completed by June 30 as required by the contract. Additional work on Main Street and East State Street will be completed in 2026.

Current Work - August 13th Update

Last week, the liner was installed in the new steel stormwater outfall, increasing capacity and providing corrosion protection.

Sidewalk work on Main St. and State St. also took place. This week, Main St. paving, sidewalk work, and light pole installation are all taking place. Paving on Main St. and sidewalk pouring were unable to be completed due to the rain this afternoon.

The sidewalk pouring schedule is as follows:

Thursday 8/14:

South side bump out (in front of Yellow Mustard) & remaining section on Main St.

Friday 8/15:

North side of State Street (bump out in front of Capitol Grounds to the M&T Bank clock).

Also on Friday, the contractor will be removing the orange construction barricades, only leaving some fencing around the curing sidewalk panels.

The tree wells at the Capitol Grounds crosswalk will remain empty until the Spring. The tree in front of Enna will be replaced at that time as well.

The project is expected to be substantially complete by the end of the day on Monday, August 18.

The final design contract is on for approval at tonight’s City Council meeting. DPW engineering staff will be completing utility design and are proposing support from VHB engineering for streetscape design. The target bid date for this project is January 2026.

Downtown businesses and shops will remain open throughout construction.
