Member Highlight: Kellogg-Hubbard Library

October 22, 2025

Tucked into the heart of downtown Montpelier, the Kellogg-Hubbard Library has long been more than a place to borrow books, it’s a cornerstone of our community, a space where generations have gathered to learn, celebrate, and connect.

A Building with Hidden Charm

If you pause on the library’s front steps, you might notice a few surprises. The porch’s stone walls are crafted from Tennessee Marble, which glows a soft mauve when the humidity is just right, perfectly complementing the pink North Conway granite columns. It’s just one example of the beauty and craftsmanship woven into this historic landmark, which has stood proudly since the 19th century.

From Books to Broadband

Though the tools of learning have changed, the spirit of the library hasn’t. From its earliest days, the Kellogg-Hubbard Library was built to serve as a community hub. Did you know the fiction room once hosted dances and lectures, and even a 1950s record player offered a hangout spot for teens?

Today, the library continues that legacy through digital resources, outreach to daycares, home delivery for house-bound patrons, and even partnerships that place books in the hands of children in foster care.

Beyond the Stacks

Each month, the library’s calendar bursts with events for every age and interest, from vaccine clinics and book discussions with the Vermont River Conservancy to new Dungeons & Dragons sessions, and a Mindful Aging Series co-hosted with the Montpelier Senior Activity Center.

In the Children’s Library, magic is literally taking shape thanks to a Vermont Early Childhood Fund grant, a new 8.5-foot reading tree, creative seating, and interactive features are transforming the space into a vibrant destination for young readers.

And don't forget the Basement Teen Center, a program of Elevate Youth Services in partnership with the library.  The Basement Teen Center is a drop-in space that welcomes all teens (12-17 years old), and there’s never a fee. Usual open hours are Mondays-Thursdays 2-6, and Fridays 2-8.

Library After Dark: A Masquerade to Remember

This Saturday, October 25th, the library will dim the lights and turn up the fun for its biggest fundraiser of the year: Library After Dark Masquerade.

The free, family-friendly event features live music, face painting, tarot readings, a costume contest, and even a supervised “kid zone” for younger partygoers. A selection of local beer, cider, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks will be available, along with plenty of Halloween cheer.

While attendance is free, RSVPs are required and donations are always appreciated to help keep the magic of KHL alive. Every dollar supports the library’s programs, resources, and outreach efforts that touch thousands of lives each year.

Powered by People

Behind every great program and every friendly recommendation is a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and board members who make the Kellogg-Hubbard Library a truly welcoming space. Their creativity, compassion, and curiosity bring the library’s mission to life every day.

As Executive Director Dan Groberg puts it, “We try to offer something for everyone and we’re always looking for new ways to bring people into the Library.”

So whether you’re attending Library After Dark, signing up for a library card, or just stopping by to enjoy that mauve glow on a misty morning — you’re part of Montpelier’s living story.

And if you’re looking for your next great read? The library recommends this year’s Vermont Reads selection, The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton, a powerful story about resilience, community, and adapting to a changing world. Sounds like a perfect reflection of Montpelier itself.
