When Lauren Parker first declared in 2002 that she wanted to leave her healthcare career behind and open a tea shop, it sounded more like a dream than a plan. But a decade later, that dream began to steep into reality. By 2012, Lauren, alongside Becky and Wes Parker, transformed an idea into a vibrant downtown hub that blends warmth, curiosity, and local flavor: The North Branch Café.

Nestled along the North Branch of the Winooski River, this cozy café has become a go-to gathering place for anyone seeking connection, whether over a cup of tea, a glass of wine, or a shared dessert. With more than 100 varieties of premium loose-leaf tea, locally sourced food, and an ever-evolving wine selection, The North Branch Café is a celebration of both Vermont’s local bounty and the global traditions of tea and wine culture.

At the heart of the café is a simple philosophy: if you do what you love and do it well, you will succeed. That spirit shines through in everything they do, from thoughtfully curated tea experiences to their innovative Enomatic wine system, which keeps wines fresh and allows guests to sample one, two, or five ounces of any of eight featured bottles. The menu also features Vermont cheeses, homemade hummus, and gluten-free and vegan options.

But The North Branch Café is more than a place to eat and drink, it’s a space for community. Their inviting “Library” room offers a quiet environment for reading, writing, small gatherings, and special events such as tastings and workshops. 

After 25 years in Montpelier, the Parkers say they’re still inspired daily by the kindness and support of the community around them. “I’ve worked a lot of places and met a lot of people,” says Lauren, “and it’s hard to come close to the level of kindness and support that we get from our Montpelier community.”
