Under the Smoke: Boreal Forest Fires, Ecology, and Culture in Northern Quebec
Tuesday Jan 9th 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm @ North Branch Nature Center
A Naturalist Journeys presentation with Naomi Heindel, Executive Director of North Branch Nature Center. Remember this summer when all the headlines were of pictures of New York City (and Vermont!) looking smoky? That smoke came from unprecedented wildfires in Canada, and specifically from an area of northern Quebec known as James Bay. The vast boreal forest there is an ecosystem that depends on and is adapted to wildfire, so in many ways the fires this summer were important, natural ways that the boreal forest remains diverse, nutrient-rich, and healthy. But there was a lot more going on under all the smoke this summer, including climate change, the impacts of decades of intensive logging practices, and the intertwined lands and livelihoods of the James Bay Cree, the First Nations people who call this region home. In this Naturalist Journey, we’ll pay a visit to the boreal forest, learn some fire ecology, take a look at the wildfires’ impacts on the James Bay Cree, and explore the complicated mix of climate change and logging at play in these forests.

Art Gallery Reception – All's Wool That Ends Wool
Friday Jan 12th 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm @ North Branch Nature Center
Please join us at North Branch Nature Center for an evening celebrating our winter art exhibit, All’s Wool That Ends Wool. Tour the gallery, meet the artists, and enjoy some light refreshments. A portion of artwork sales will support NBNC in our mission of Connecting People with the Natural World. About the Show: This group show includes felting, knitting, weaving, basket making, hooked rugs, and more from fiber artists across Vermont. About half of the work is from a project organized by Kimberly Hagen to promote the use of felted wool as an attractive, sustainable, and sound dampening option for restaurant decor. The remaining work highlights the wide variety of other styles and techniques used by fiber artists in Vermont. The felted portion of the show was funded by a 2018 grant from the American Sheep Industry Association and was previously exhibited at the Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival and the Hildene Estate in Manchester, VT. Artists: Alison Forest, Bradie Hansen, Chelsea Clarke Sawyer, Eve Jacobs-Carnahan, Jenny Brown, Jennifer Davey, Katelynn Latz, Kerry Wood, Kim Goodling, Kimberly Hagen, Kris McDermet, Laurie Curtis, Muffy Grolier, Neysa Russo, Pamela Wilson, Robin Courtney, Sheri Schenk, Suzanne Taylor. Alfred Hitchcock & the Art of Suspense
Wednesday Jan 17th 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm @ Kellogg-Hubbard Library
Hitchcock famously said “Some films are slices of life; mine are slices of cake.” His career spanned forty years and many film eras. Film expert Rick Winston will discuss the evolution of Hitchcock’s craft, exploring his favorite themes, his relationship with his collaborators, and his wry sense of humor no matter how grisly the subject matter. By drawing on twelve film clips, starting with his 1925 silent “The Lodger” and continuing through to his Hollywood classics such as “Notorious” and “Rear Window,” Winston will illuminate the arc of Hitchcock’s brilliant career. This is a free, in-person program in the Hayes Room at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Want to Make a Difference? Monday, January 29, 2024, 4-5:30, Hayes Room, Kellogg- Hubbard Library, Montpelier What is the connection between our Dog River, the Winooski, Lake Memphremagog, Lake Champlain and the landfill in Coventry/Newport? Plan to join Peggy Stevens and Henry Coe from the Northeast Kingdom environmental organization Do Not Undermine Memphremagog Purity, to learn more about where our trash goes and how its byproducts, such as toxic leachate from the landfill, threatens our rivers and lakes and will likely end up where we like to swim, walk our dogs, and watch our kids play soccer. Find out what is at stake and how we can influence the outcome. Bring a friend and join us at 4 PM at Kellogg-Hubbard Library on Monday, January 29th.
