City Hall Plaza: 10am @ 39 Main Street.

A group of community members will read Frederick Douglass’ powerful 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” The public reading invites reflection on the meaning of freedom and independence in the United States—then and now. Douglass, a formerly enslaved person who became a leading abolitionist, writer, and orator, delivered the speech on July 5, 1852, at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, NY. He later became a key advisor to President Abraham Lincoln and, on June 23, 1888, became the first Black American nominated for president at a major party convention.
